Nick Fury is the one who gave birth to the Avengers initiative. We will see in Captain Marvel how he learns about the various intergalactic threats and this jumpstarts the idea to set up a team of superheroes to tackle these interstellar threats. But Nick Fury’s role has been decreasing with every movie. First, he had a considerable role in The Avengers, then had a little part in Age of Ultron. In Infinity War, he was just seen at the end of the movie in the post-credits scene.
We saw in Infinity War that what happened in Captain America: Civil War was being carried on and the two heroes, IronMan and Captain America still hadn’t resolved their differences. So, we can say that Civil War was one of the most important chapters of the MCU, and yet Marvel chose not to include Nick Fury in that movie. After all, he should be concerned about all of the Avengers and he should have been there.
Samuel L Jackson recently talked about his exclusion from Civil War expressing how he was not happy with that. He stated, “There’s a lot of stuff you can do with him. But has he been used wisely? Yeah, except for things like Civil War. It’s like if all the Avengers are f##king fighting each other, where is the guardian? Where’s that dude who comes in and goes, ‘alright, everybody go to your room. I’ll be there to talk to you in a minute.’ Either he’s the guy that brought them together and he’s the glue, or he’s not. I felt little – I felt a way about that.”
Last we saw of Nick Fury was when he being dusted off. But before going away, he pushed the pager and called in Captain Marvel. With time travel being in Avengers Endgame, we can be sure that Jackson will reprise will role in the movie.
