Captain Marvel is going to be the prequel to the whole of the MCU since the events that will be covered in the movie will be situated in the 1990s. So, obviously, there’s going to be a lot of tie-in with the rest of the Marvel movies. The movie also stands at the risk of creating some plot holes. And it seems that one has already been created and the movie hasn’t even released yet.
From the trailers, we have seen that Nick Fury would learn that there are extraterrestrial threats out there in space. We would become well versed in this subject since he would serve as a mentor to Captain Marvel.
Let me take you back to a scene from The Avengers where Nick Fury reveals the reason SHIELD is employing the Tesseract to build weapons. Fury mentions that it was because of Thor. His exact words were, “last year, Earth had a visitor from another planet, who had a grudge match that leveled a small town. We learned that not only are we not alone, but we are hopelessly, hilariously outgunned.”
Now, assuming that Nick Fury was not ‘compartmentalising’ anything and was indeed telling the truth, this creates a plot hole. Clearly, Fury was aware of this interstellar threats years before Thor came to Earth. Why did only now he decided to go ahead with using the Tesseract to create high-tech weapons?
No doubt, Nick is a guy who has trouble trusting anyone because of a hard-learned lesson in the young days but that still doesn’t solve why Nick just laid bare hands even after knowing that Earth was incompetent against these outer enemies and having access to the Tesseract.
Perhaps this will be solved in Captain Marvel, but for the moment, it remains a plot hole. Do tell your thoughts on this.
