The exceptional assassin, Black Widow made her debut in Ironman 2 where she was revealed to be working under Nick Fury, the head of SHIELD. She has then reprised her role in every Avengers movie and the sequels to Captain America: The First Avenger. She is not a particularly popular superhero but she has been an integral part of the MCU as she is one of the founding members of the Avengers initiative.
And she is now getting her own solo movie. The movie is slated to release in 2020, meaning the filming will probably start next year. Marvel has considered many female directors to direct this project and one of them has now some words to say about Marvel and they are not any bit of praise.
Lucrecia Martel spoke about how Marvel thinks lowly of female directors. She stated, “Marvel and other such production houses are trying to involve more female filmmakers. They also told me, ‘Don’t worry about the action scenes, we will take care of that.’ I was thinking, ‘well I would love to meet Scarlett Johansson but also I would love to make the action sequences.”
She claimed, “Companies are interested in female filmmakers but they still think action sequences are for male directors. The first thing I asked them was maybe if they could change the special effects because there’s so many laser fights….I find the horrible. Also, the soundtrack of Marvel films is quite horrendous. Maybe we disagree on this but it’s really hard to watch a Marvel film. It’s painful to the ears to watch Marvel films.”
This is clearly a behind-the-scenes feature which shows us that Marvel does not yet fully entrust female directors.
It’s obvious that the reason Marvel opted to make a Black Widow movie is to show people that they care about their female characters also. This came in the wake of the immense success of DC’s Wonder Woman, which had a female as a lead and also a female wearing the director’s hat.
Black Widow was also one of the few characters who survived Infinity War. Even if she dies in Avengers Endgame, she won’t strike the emotionality of the audiences because of her non-popularity compared to the other characters. Anyways, even after her death, her solo movie would be ready to greet the audiences.
