Infinity War picked up right after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. In Thor: Ragnarok, we witnessed Thor trying to prevent Ragnarok from happening but in the end, he learns that Ragnarok needs to happen in order to defeat his evil sister, Hela, the Goddess of Death. We know that the MCU Thor is partly inspired by the events of the Norse Mythology. Not everything that happens in the MCU regarding these Norse events is not exactly what really happened in the Norse Mythology.
A Reddit user has predicted that Ragnarok has not yet ended and it is still going on in Infinity War. Ragnarok shall conclude in the yet-untitled Avengers 4. This theorist says that Ragnarok is supposed to be the “judgment of the Gods” and like Odin’s death, Thor’s death is also inevitable. This theory says that now Thanos is completing the prophecy unknowingly. Remember the dialogue – “Dread it, run from it, destiny still arrives.” This theory says that this refers to the destiny that the Asgardians are bound to have. So, this Thor is supposed to die in Avengers 4 to conclude Ragnarok.
In the Norse beliefs, Thor died fighting the Midgard serpent. And giant serpents nearly were included in Infinity War, as revealed in The Art of Avengers: Infinity War book. The Thor we saw in the movie is much powerful than he ever was. And with that Stormbreaker, he can even go against the wrath of the Infinity Gauntlet. Chris Hemsworth’s contract with Marvel is complete with Avengers 4. No extension of his contract has been done yet. So, a few of the original Avengers are definitely going down in Avengers 4. Thor has the same chances as anyone else.
